A Bryant Symons diamond machined photoreceptor
substrate has a surface finish of between 0.01 microns Ra a straightness
of around 2.5 microns over 300mm and a roundness in the order of
2 microns. This degree of precision, together with the inherent
cleanliness of diamond machining, guarantees a more consistent,
high quality coating yield.
The drum substrate is loaded onto two specially
designed, dynamically balanced adaptors. With the control panel
set to automatic control the spindle rotates and the main-slide
traverses from left to right taking a roughing cut along the drum.
At the end of its stroke the main-slide stops, the diamond tool
advances to its cutting position and the main-slide traverses from
left to right taking a finishing cut along the drum, producing an
unbeatable surface finish. On completion of the cutting operation
the spindles stop and the diamond retracts. The tails-stock then
retracts to remove the finished drum.

Bryant Symons OPC Drum Turning Machines are currently
used by many facilities worldwide in the production of photoreceptor
drums for the photocopier and fax machine industries. The machine
also has applications in the printing industry, particularly for
finishing the surface of drums used in litho printers.
Special machines can be manufactured for larger
drums if required.
